Master Sheng Yen on Suffering
The Four Sufferings of birth, aging, sickness and death
Acknowledging the existence of Eight Sufferings in one's life and facing them honestly is the first step out of endless cycles of rebirth.
What kind of suffering and happiness are concerned in Buddhism
Sensual happiness will bring us suffering while meditative happiness can relieve us from the burdens of our body. The utmost happiness is that of liberation, free from all mental and physical burdens.
The difference between pain and suffering
Pain is a physical phenomenon experienced with our nerves. Suffering is a mental phenomenon, a psychological thing. Pain is not tantamount to suffering, yet suffering can often cause pain. Our suffering comes from our craving and attachment, and from our unwilling or reluctant to give up or let go. If we are able to readily take up responsibilities, let go of any attachment, and face reality and deal with the situation at hand without running away from it, then we won't feel suffering in our minds.
Suffering one of the Four Noble Truths
Suffering comes from our inner afflictions and results from our past actions. We can reduce suffering by following the Path and creating no more negative causes.
